Japan Business Day

Scroll down

North Rhine-Westphalia, with its capital Düsseldorf, is the strongest location for Japan in Germany and continental Europe. Since 2002, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia - represented by NRW.Global Business -, the state capital Düsseldorf and the Japanese community in Düsseldorf, together with their partners, have hosted the annual Japan Business Day, one of the largest German-Japanese business conferences.

The Japan Business Day is an integral part of Japan Day and once again underlines the importance of Düsseldorf as a location for Japan. It is aimed at German and Japanese business representatives.

The next Business Day Japan will take place on May 26, 2025 at Hotel KÖ59 in Düsseldorf.

Japan Business Day 2024

Japan Business Day 2024 took place as the business program of Japan Day and one of the largest German-Japanese business conferences on Monday, May 27, 2024 at Hotel Kö59 in Düsseldorf.

This year, representatives of Japanese and German companies presented future prospects and applications on the topic of "German and Japanese Open Innovation Strategies for a Better Future".

Global networking, rapid technological change, increased demands on sustainability goals, and shorter product life cycles are putting companies under great pressure to innovate – not only in Germany, but also in Japan. For years, many companies have been successfully implementing open innovation strategies, in which they open up their own innovation process to external ideas, technologies or expertise in order to increase their own innovation potential and secure competitive advantages. They often involve customers, universities, research institutes or start-ups in the process.

What do successful open innovation strategies look like? What foundations must they be based on? And what country-specific differences in open innovation strategies are there between Germany and Japan?

Large companies and strong SMEs in Japan, North Rhine-Westphalia, and the state capital of Düsseldorf have often demonstrated an ability to combine traditional strengths and innovative ability in an excellent way. It is our hope that the exchange at the Japan Business Day will contribute to this and open up opportunities for cooperation.

The event was aimed at trade visitors.

Partner

The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Action and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia has the task of strengthening economic growth in the state, securing existing jobs and improving the framework conditions for future-proof new jobs.

With approximately 400 Japanese companies in the city and 550 companies in the immediate vicinity, the Düsseldorf region is the most important Japanese location in continental Europe. Numerous Japanese institutions and an excellent German-Japanese infrastructure ensure that Japanese companies find ideal business conditions here. Many of them have their European or German headquarters in Düsseldorf and use this environment to develop their markets.

The city has also established a Japan Desk at the Economic Development Agency, a central point of contact for Japanese companies to assist with all aspects of the relocation process, as well as for companies already established in the area.

The Japanese Chamber of Industry and Commerce (JIHK) in Düsseldorf has been representing the interests of its predominantly Japanese member companies as a registered association since 1966. With more than 530 members, it is the largest representation of Japanese companies in Europe.

The JIHK's objective is to facilitate economic relations between Germany and Japan, enhance the local environment for Japanese companies, and support the business activities of its members. To this end, the JIHK provides business-related information, publications, and seminars in Japanese, as well as tailored advice for its members.

It represents the interests of over 80,000 member companies from industry, trade, and services in the state capital Düsseldorf and the ten towns in the Mettmann district. The IHK's role is to advocate for the collective interests of its member businesses, including the numerous Japanese member companies.

For companies seeking business opportunities in Japan, the IHK Düsseldorf has established a Japan Desk to provide tailored advice and assistance.
