Europe's model region for successful structural change

Europe's largest lignite mining region in North Rhine-Westphalia is facing profound change and an enormous structural challenge as a result of the German government's decision to phase out coal by 2030. At the same time, the Rheinisches Revier has a great opportunity to become a European model region for energy supply and resource security.

The Rheinisches Revier includes the districts of Düren, Euskirchen, Heinsberg, Rhein-Erft-Kreis, Rhein-Kreis Neuss, Aachen City Region and the independent city of Mönchengladbach – where a pioneering transition to climate neutrality will take place over the next few years.

New industries of the future are helping to speed up the transformation of the Rheinisches Revier towards climate neutrality.
