With its new technology center in Elsdorf, the Düsseldorf-based machine and plant manufacturer GEA is significantly expanding its capacities in the field of pharmaceutical freeze drying. The site in the Rhenish mining region replaces the previous plant in Hürth, combining research, development, production, and service under one roof. The investment, which runs into tens of millions, is creating around 250 jobs.
GEA's high-tech factory manufactures freeze-drying equipment used worldwide in the production of temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals. In a multi-stage process, moisture is gently removed from liquid vaccines at temperatures as low as minus 50 degrees Celsius. The result is a stable powder that only needs to be liquefied by adding water before use for injection. Due to rising demand, GEA has expanded production capacity at the new site. The plant also sets high standards in terms of energy efficiency. Photovoltaic systems on the roofs supply the site with electricity, and heat pumps provide heating and cooling. GEA plans to eliminate the use of fossil fuels entirely.
At the opening, Mona Neubaur, the Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Action of North Rhine-Westphalia, said: “Today is a good day for the future of Elsdorf and the entire Rhenish mining region. The GEA Group is spearheading the global shift toward climate-neutral production right here in the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia. Efficient, digitally networked production methods and sustainable technologies are bringing us closer to a resilient and climate-neutral economy in very concrete terms.”
